How we help children learn
We help children to learn by helping the children to retrieve their prior learning.  We add our new learning and sticky knowledge to this so that we develop a strong and meaningful schema - this is shown on our schema walls in the classroom.  It means that the children are able to know more and remember more of their learning. We help them to ignite their schema by interconnecting the curriculum and by using what is familiar to them within their locality.

Topic newsletters are available at the bottom of this page for more information about our current topic.

Life in Acorn Class

The children in Acorn class will experience  a great year of learning.

Our PE day is a Friday, please attend school in your school uniform and bring along your PE kit in a small drawstring bag. Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named.

How can I help and support my child at school?

Homework will include Reading and Keyword Recognition. Acorn's weekly newsletter will also include maths problems and a handwriting challenge.

We may send home a half termly homework challenge to complete over the holiday.

Reading continues to be a great importance and  children will be heard reading as often as possible both in a group and individually. Please ensure your child's  book bag is in school every Friday.

Please hear your child read as often as possible, daily if you can and record in their blue reading record book. Bug Club is available for extra reading books at home, all of which are matched to your child's present reading level. If you need a reminder of your Bug Club login please let us know.

Practical ideas you may wish to make use of:

  • Sharing books, reading with and to your child.

  • Visiting places of interest, talking to your child about them, and encouraging them to ask questions. Places you may choose to visit: the library, country parks and local nature reserves, museums, etc.

  • Making opportunities to play and work with others.

  • Opportunities to be creative.
