Mrs Gowing will be teaching us this year.

Welcome to a year of learning!

Autumn 2021

Our Curriculum

At Wimboldsley Primary School we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that promotes excellence. We aim to foster a lifelong love of learning, through delivery a twenty first century education. A cross curricular approach to learning encourages the children to be independent, reflective learners and responsible citizens. We work closely with parents to support children’s learning.

More information to follow about our new and exciting topics for next term!

In Years 4 and 5, we will be focusing on the following things:

  • Improving our vocabulary.
  • Developing our comprehension skills - working on our prediction skills, retrieval and
inference questions. We will be improving our vocabulary and understanding, as well as
answering questions by using clues in the text.
  • Becoming familiar with the features of stories, and developing our descriptive skills.
  • Continuing to develop our love of reading.  WILLOW CLASS LOVE TO READ!
  • Being introduced to and inspired by different authors.
  • Writing setting and character descriptions, and innovating stories that we are familiar with. We are continuing to develop our vocabulary and writing technique to form longer narratives.
  • Planning, drafting, writing, editing, evaluating and proof-reading our work.
  • Improving our knowledge of SPaG. We will focus on extending the range of sentences with one or more clause using a wider range of conjunctions, choosing nouns or pronouns appropriately, and expressing time, place and cause using conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions.

In Maths we will be continuing to look at the 4 mathematical operations and
mathematical reasoning alongside a variety of other maths topics.
We will be focussing on developing our fluency, problem-solving and reasoning using APE.

It would be really helpful if you could:

Practise all of the times tables.

Let your child explain what they have done in Maths that day.

This term ...

More information to follow!

Below are ideas for helping your child to learn at home.

We have access to TT Rockstars - this is a wonderful opportunity for your child to battle against other pupils to become the ultimate times tables ROCKSTAR!

Practise your times tables fluency through ‘Hit The Button’

Or try some of these fun games:

Please encourage your child to read regularly at home, either by reading a book, or logging onto MyOn and then Quizzing on Accelerated Reader.  As they read, ask them questions related to the book that they are reading. For example:

Why do you think the author chose to use certain words.

Can you compare the book to the last book you read?

Pretend to be one of the characters of the story and write a diary entry.

What would the character think if.....?

Do you like the way the story ends? Why ?

It is also important to praise and support independent reading for pleasure, maybe at bed time or during a quiet moment during the day,

This is a useful website to find all sorts of learning activities.

Look at the spelling rules for plural words- https://howtospell.co.uk/pluralrules.php

Then test yourself here- https://howtospell.co.uk/quizseven.php

Here are a selection of videos to keep you active:

Life in Willow Class

The children in Willow class are looking forward to a great year of learning.

Swimming will be on a Monday for the Autumn term for the children in Y5 and PE will be on a Friday. Your child will be required to arrive in school in their PE kits on that day.

We have a focused session on Reading, Writing and Maths each day. We also enjoy lots of opportunities to learn about Science, Computing, French, History, Geography, RE, Art, DT and Music each week.

How can I help and support my child at school?

Practical ideas you may wish to make use of:

Writing at home

  • Play with words. Thinking of interesting words and discussing new ones can help increase the words your child uses when they write – look words up in the dictionary
  • Play word games and do puzzles together to help your child learn more about words and spelling
  • Talk about ideas and information they are going to write about. Talk about experiences, diagrams, graphs, pictures, photos and material that your child is planning to use for school work. Discussing the information and main ideas can help their planning for writing and their understanding, too.
  • Play with words. Thinking of interesting words and discussing new ones can help increase the words your child uses when they write

Maths at home

  • Find and read large numbers in your environment eg nineteen thousand, three hundred and twenty-three
  • Count forwards and backwards (starting with numbers like 10,098, 10,099, 10,100, 10,101 then back again)
  • work out patterns – make codes from numbers.
  • Chant times tables together
