Life in Oak Class

The children in Oak class have had a fabulous start to 2018.

Our usual routine involves:

- Grammar Hammer and Big Maths on a Monday morning.

- PE day is Tuesday. Please ensure that you have your P.E. kit in school.

We have focused sessions on Reading, Writing/SPaG and Maths each day. We also will be exploring other areas of the curriculum such as the Arts, French, Science and the Humanities/ RE each week.

Our Curriculum

At Wimboldsley Primary School we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that promotes excellence. We aim to foster a lifelong love of learning, through delivery a twenty first century education. A cross curricular approach to learning encourages the children to be independent, reflective learners and responsible citizens. We work closely with parents to support children’s learning.

Our first main class text is 'The Dragon of Moston' a legend written by a local storyteller called 'The Journey Man'. We will explore a variety of  non-fiction texts based on dragons and monsters, later in the half term. 'Its great up ere' is a tremendous performance poem written  by the poet Tony Walsh and we hope to write our own locality based poems inspired by his work.

During this term, along with the above, we will be learning about the following genres:-

  • Fiction - Narratives

  • Non Fiction – non-chronologocal reports, explanation and instruction texts

  • Poetry

SPaG will be covered weekly to help support us throughout our work this year. Spelling tests will be every Friday morning; with new spellings sent home on Friday afternoons.

This term in maths we will be focussing on re-capping essential skills in order to help us with the Year 6 curriculum and explore more complex mathematics. We will be looking at:-

  • Number and Place Value
  • Calculating across 0 through positive and negative numbers/integers
  • Mental calculations
  • The 4 operations: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
  • The order of operations (BODMAS/BIDMAS)
  • Fractions
  • Shape
  • Choosing efficient written and mental methods

Our Topic

This half term our topic is called ‘What do we know about our locality?’. We will be exploring our locality  by developing our fieldwork and research skills.

Please see our Curriculum Overview at the bottom of the page for more information.

Our final year at Wimboldsley will be a busy and fun filled year of learning. Later in the year we will enjoy finding out about:

* Zoo Project involving Chester Zoo

*South America

... and lots more!
