Life in Acorn Class

The children in Acorn class are looking forward to a great year of learning.

Our PE day is Thursday. Your child will need t-shirt, shorts, pumps, track suit and trainers.

We have a focused session on Reading, Writing, Maths and Phonics each day. We also enjoy lots of opportunities to learn about Science, Computing, French, History, Geography, RE, Art, DT and Music each week.

In Year 1 we complete Grammar Hammer and Big Maths on a Monday.

Our Curriculum

At Wimboldsley Primary School we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that promotes excellence. We aim to foster a lifelong love of learning, through delivery a twenty first century education. A cross curricular approach to learning encourages the children to be independent, reflective learners and responsible citizens. We work closely with parents to support children’s learning.

Key skills we will be developing in Year 1 and Reception

English

* Using blending and segmenting to read and write.

* Increasing our sight vocabularly.

* Writing for a range of purposes.

* Using adjectives and conjunctions to make our sentences more interesting.

Maths

* Working with numbers up to 100.

* Addition and Subtraction.

* Doubling and halving.

* Number bonds.

* Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Our Topic

This half term we will be learning all about 'Kipper Stories' and 'Toys'. We will be finding out about Toys past and present.  This will link to lots of areas of the curriculum including Science and History.

Please see our newsletter at the bottom of the page for more information.

It will be a busy and fun filled year of learning.

How can I help and support my child at school?

Homework

Homework is set on Thursday and should be returned on Monday.

Homework will include Reading, Spellings, Maths and Learning Log.

Spelling Check will be on Monday.

Reading continues to be a great importance and  children will be heard reading as often as possible both in a group and individually. Please ensure your child's  book bag is in school every day

Please hear your child read as often as possible, daily if you can and record in their blue reading record book.

The children are given the opportunity and responsibility of changing their own books every morning. Please encourage them to change their books regularly.

Parents and children are more than welcome to change reading books together in the mornings if they wish to do so.

Key Websites your child can use to support their learning include:

www.topmarks.co.uk

www.bbc.co.uk/education

Practical ideas you may wish to make use of:

  • Sharing books, reading with and to your child.

  • Visiting places of interest, talking to your child about them, and encouraging them to ask questions. Places you may choose to visit: the library, country parks and local nature reserves, museums, etc.

  • Making opportunities to play and work with others.

  • Opportunities to be creative.
